A Challenge to the new Supreme Minister et al

Being the head of an international organization like Sigma Upsilon-Upsilon Lambda is a thankless job. This, unlike a political position, is devoid of any personal financial benefit, not to mention the absence of a dependable structure worthy of mention.

It is no secret that not a few members of the organization expressed dissatisfaction over the way previous leadership handle the affairs of the fraternity. But it is no secret either that most constituents just love to play the role of skeptics among kibitzers who take joy at a slight sight of foul performance by the elected leaders. In effect, the organization has the situation where members complain of the performance of their officers and officers complaining to high heavens that most members of SUUL are trapped in the ancient play of “crab mentality”.

From the standpoint of a true KNIGHT in the medieval period, this situation is highly discouraging and may call for a serious organizational surgery with the use of the authentic Knight’s blade of Sir Lancelot as scalpel.  But these Knights in SUUL have only their paddles to settle differences. And paddles had long been outlawed by the evolved conscience of the government awakened to the truth that physical pain, as the tool of testing one’s loyalty and dedication, is no longer acceptable in the modern minds of science and politics. The rationality of it just doesn’t fit the logic of a rational mind.

And so SUUL, with all its chaos and stubborn heads, appears to be marching into a quagmire of hopelessness. The only consolation left however is that this Fraternity has no monopoly of the type of organization it has at present. We have in our midst a number of organizations which are a lot worse than ours. We need not mention names of these organizations but we can see some of them which are already in the brink of disintegration and collapse. Some even employed the services of evil hands to ensure the positioning of personal agenda over organizational advantage. And from our view, SUUL is comparatively better-off than other groups whose structural lay-outs are so designed to fit political and personal greed.

It is in this premise that the seat of the Supreme Minister must be crowned with challenges. And it is on the shoulders of the newly elected officers, led by the Supreme Minister himself, that the challenge we rightly posted should be addressed with all magnanimity and patience, directed at the vision of fulfilling its mission which is for the betterment of the organization and society.

The Supreme Minister and his lieutenants must acknowledge that this Fraternity, no matter how long the number of 40 years it has in existence, remains in the realm of infancy. Installing reforms within the organization is only achievable when those who are at the helm should correctly set examples for members to emulate.

We salute to the willingness of the newly installed officers to take upon their shoulders the yoke of serving the organization. But let them be reminded that such positions are not for glory or for the sheer euphoria of having won the trust offered by the members.

Yes reforms must be introduced. And it must be the type of reforms that will make us all proud of being Knights and Ulphans. Let us all be reminded that we recruit young bloods into our fold, even make our sons follow the same footstep we took, with the assurance that SUUL is one organization worth devoting a portion of their lives.

Let the days of barbaric approach be thrown into the dustbin. Let our individualistic ignorance be converted to wisdom and service, within and outside the organization. Let the new generation of Knights and Ulphans realize that by joining this fraternity they have also joined the ranks of matured men and women whose mission is to inculcate upon them the idea that Life in SUUL is nurtured in such a way that no other fraternity can offer.

KNIGHTHOOD after all, is not a meaningless choice of word voted by the sixteen founders. It is a sacred term sanctified even to these days by those whose spirits are bound to protect the doctrines of morality in Christian faith. Going against it is an act of self-dishonor to the vow we committed during initiations. Going against it is an act of desecrating the sanctity of human lives and Christians doctrines.

So to the new Supreme Minister Brod Pete Amomompon et al, this quarter offers its unwavering support to whatever benevolent reforms you will introduce. But in the same breath, we also wish to make you understand that this quarter is constantly on its feet ready to bring discomfort at anyone who will wittingly wish to mislead the organization and bring with them their own distorted version of Knights and Ulphans into a lost path.
